Delta Sigma Pi at Kelley IUPUI receives Chapter of Excellence award

Posted on March 28, 2019 by sgriffin

The Delta Sigma Pi Kappa Sigma Chapter at Kelley IUPUI has been recognized as a Chapter of Excellence for the 2018-2019 school year.

The chapter joins 60 other chapters celebrating this highest tier of designation, and it was the only chapter from the Midwest region (including Indiana, Illinois, parts of Missouri and Iowa) to receive the honor.

Katie Marsh, BS’20, is the current president for Delta Sigma Pi’s Kappa Sigma Chapter. She says they are already on their way to being recognized at the chapter of excellence tier again in 2019.

The designation defines a chapter as “operationally sound with a well-rounded program that focuses on larger scale events and national Fraternity promotion.” It requires chapters to submit forms and examples of their dedication to local and national brothers, professional development and community service.

According to the Chapter Management program, “A tier level approach… gives chapters a way to highlight their program and gives them credit for all activities done throughout the year.”

At Kelley School of Business at IUPUI, Delta Sigma Pi has 67 active members and 12 pledges who will be welcomed into the fraternity on March 23.  The Kappa Sigma Chapter focuses on professional development by attending conferences and leadership training programs.

Marsh says of the opportunities, “I just love leadership roles; it’s something I fell into naturally. They had a really good time management session. I know it’s something all students deal with, and it’s really important. I was able to take away some good tips from that session, including: Take care of yourself first and stay on track and prioritize.”

“At Presidents’ Academy, we did a really helpful assessment on communication style,’ Marsh added. “It covered natural communication style, communication style under stress, and how you choose to interact with people. That helped me a lot. We have a fairly large chapter. When you need to communicate openly with 62 people, it can be difficult. I need to make sure everyone is comfortable coming to talk with me. That was something that was interesting to learn and develop, because communication is so important.”

The chapter was also acknowledged for their excellence in community service. Some of the projects the group took on include working with local nonprofits such as Riley Children’s Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, Gleaner’s Food Bank and Midwest Food Bank Indianapolis.

Along with professional development and community service opportunities, the fraternity gives members a large network of business contacts. When they graduate, the current brothers will join a national network of over 275,000 initiated Delta Sigma Pi members. Locally, alumni of the Kappa Sigma chapter include employees at finance institutions like One Main Financial and One America. Marsh intends to invite them to network with the current active members and pledges through a speaker’s series beginning March 24.

The organization meets every other Sunday. Students studying business or economics can learn more about joining Delta Sigma Pi’s Kappa Sigma chapter on IUPUI’s campus through an informal meet and greet event at the beginning of each semester.
