Loren Bumbalough receives Senior Academic Advisor distinction

Posted on May 7, 2018 by haihguo

Distinction makes Bumbalough the second Senior Academic Advisor at IUPUI.

Compassionate is the best way to describe Loren Bumbalough’s dedicated approach to her work.

The Kelley School of Business advisor extends selfless compassion to each student and an unmatched dedication to her co-workers and the profession of academic advising.

“Our students come in with so many plans, and it’s inspiring to see all the work they’re doing at school and out of school. I love hearing about their lives. I find so much joy in seeing students succeed,” said Bumbalough.

With a passion to help others succeed, Bumbalough works daily with students at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI to plan out the best course of action for their futures.

She recently was named a Senior Academic Advisor through the Academic Advisor Development Program (AADP) at IUPUI, making her only the second academic advisor at IUPUI to achieve that distinction.

The AADP is designed to promote undergraduate student learning and success, to standardize quality and training for academic advising across campus, to grow advising as a profession and to retain highly effective academic advisors.

To achieve the Senior Academic Advisor position, Bumbalough presented a portfolio with evidence of 46 outcomes: including examples of assessing and improving procedures for communicating with students, teaching students to develop a four-year plan and engaging students to help them develop strategies to effectively manage time and study habits. She submitted an application consisting of 40 pages with 50 appendices, including letters of recommendations from administrators, students and staff.

One letter written by a student described working with Bumbalough to navigate a tricky career path, to understand his options, and described her selfless support of his personal progression through not only his studies, but his major and his career. Bumbalough made him feel the school truly cared, he explained.

“Hearing from students is what inspires me each day at Kelley. Going through this process and achieving this goal is an honor,” said Bumbalough. “It has re-inspired me in my job, as I look at all that we do on a daily basis. All of this relates to student retention and success. I appreciate all of the opportunities I’ve been given.”

“IUPUI created the AADP to recognize and retain advisors who are committed to the campus’ strategic goals related to student success. Loren has demonstrated her commitment to those goals through high quality, well-rounded academic advising. We’re thrilled to be able to recognize her excellent work,” said Matthew Rust, director of Campus Career and Advising Services in the IUPUI Division of Undergraduate Education.

Bumbalough says she has also been inspired to pursue more academic publications. She will present with fellow Kelley advisor Le’Joy White at the Jaguar Academic Advising Association’s (JACADA) professional development day in May about Generation Z and how to keep students engaged during workshops or presentations.  She hopes to take this experience and research to a publication through the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

The highest step in the AADP is the Master Academic Advisor, which Bumbalough says she could apply for after three years.

“Having accomplished this goal, I look forward to thinking about bigger and better things to continue to enhance my advising and all the advising here at the Kelley School at IUPUI. I can’t wait to get started!”
