IU Kelley School of Business at IUPUIGo from Moment to Momentum

New Tobias Leadership Center program will connect students, faculty with executive leaders

Posted on March 25, 2019 by Teresa Mackin

INDIANAPOLIS — A new Executive in Residence Program in the Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at Indiana University will provide students and faculty access to seasoned leaders.

The Executive in Residence will reach across schools and disciplines at Indiana University to provide access for students and faculty to executives through meaningful engagement both on campus and within the community.

Based on IUPUI’s campus, the Tobias Leadership Center works to engage diverse leaders to meet the challenges of impact, innovation and inclusion. Its Executive in Residence program further develops the connection between those leaders and IU, by bridging the gap between practice and scholarship.

The inaugural Executive in Residence (EIR) is Neal Rothermel, co-founder of VMS BioMarketing, a healthcare education company that has been recognized on Fortune’s Top 100 Workplaces and has more than 100 full-time and 800 on-demand clinical educators nationwide. He participated in the 2017 Tobias Fellows cohort and is a member of the Tobias Leadership Network.

“We are honored to have Neal serve as our first Executive in Residence at the Tobias Leadership Center,” said Julie Manning Magid, executive and academic director at the Tobias Leadership Center and professor of business law at the IU Kelley School of Business on the IUPUI campus. “The goal of the center is to serve as a hub of leadership study by bringing together the academic study of leadership and the practice of leadership. The EIR program allows us to extend our work beyond executive education, presentations and research and to provide access for any IU student and faculty to meet, network and learn from executives in diverse sectors of for-profit, nonprofit, public service and education.”

“Neal’s experience as an entrepreneur of a high-growth company will allow him to provide valuable insights to our students,” Magid added. “He will also help to connect faculty and students with other business leaders who may serve as mentors for students or speakers in a class.”

“My goal is to help build a culture where executives are integrated into the life of the school,” said Rothermel. “I want students to feel comfortable and drawn to consult with business practitioners.”

“I hope to instill successful leadership practices in our students so they are ready for exponential changes ahead. I’m passionate about company culture as a growth strategy, and I believe a company succeeds when those in leadership positions know how to align employees toward a common purpose. I look forward to sharing the lessons I’ve learned.”
