Kelley professor chosen as co-editor for top supply chain management journal

Posted on September 15, 2016 by Teresa Mackin

INDIANAPOLIS — Barbara Flynn, the Richard M. and Myra Louise Buskirk Professor of Manufacturing Management at the IU Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, has been selected to serve as a co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Supply Chain Management. She serves alongside Mark Pagell of University College Dublin and Brian Fugate of the University of Arkansas.

“I am very honored to have been selected as one of the co-editors of Journal of Supply Chain Management ,” said Flynn. “I am looking forward to working with the other co-editors to contribute to advancing knowledge worldwide about supply chain management and to continuing the journal’s reputation for the best supply chain management research.”

Flynn’s research interests include global supply chain management, quality management, operations strategy, just-in-time manufacturing and group technology. She is the director of the High Performance Manufacturing research group, which is a global research team that studies the relationship between manufacturing practices and performance in various organizational and national cultures. In addition to publishing three books and numerous book chapters, Flynn has published articles in the top supply chain management and operations management journals.

“Although research published in the Journal of Supply Chain Management is strongly grounded in theory and employs rigorous research methods, the problems that are researched have their roots in real supply chains,” explained Flynn. “Thus, the research that we publish synthesizes real problems with high quality academic research approaches, so the findings that are published are generalizable beyond specific firms.

“In this role, I will have the opportunity to mentor young researchers and help them develop their research and reviewing skills. I also will be doing a substantial amount of traveling to promote the journal and work with prospective authors.”

Flynn currently teaches Kelley MBA courses in project management, service operations management and operations management. She says this role will enhance her teaching through exposure to interesting examples and broader frameworks.

“This role will expose me to both cutting edge supply chain management research on a broad range of topics and to interesting researchers from around the world. Although I have been doing research on supply chain management for many years, being a co-editor of Journal of Supply Chain Management will help to broaden my research horizons,” said Flynn.

Flynn served previously as the editor-in-chief of Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Quality Management Journal and Decision Line. She is also an associate editor of International Journal of Operation and Production Management and Decision Sciences. She serves on the editorial review board of International Journal of Applied Quality Management, Production and Operations Management and Benchmarking for Quality Management and Technology.

Flynn received her DBA from Indiana University in operations management, an MBA with an emphasis in operations management and managerial economics from Marquette University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ripon College. Her previous academic appointments include Wake Forest University, Iowa State University and Louisiana State University.
