Three Kelley School of Business faculty members receive fellowships to support research efforts

Posted on June 12, 2014 by Teresa Mackin

INDIANAPOLIS — Phil Cochran, executive associate dean for the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, has announced this year’s recipients of three long-standing faculty fellowships.

  • Dena Cox, professor of marketing, was awarded the Roger Schmenner Faculty Fellowship.
  • Randy Heron, professor of finance, has been reappointed the Roger and Barbara Schmenner Faculty Fellow.
  • J. Reed Smith, professor of accounting and faculty chair for Graduate Accounting Programs at Kelley Indianapolis, has been named the latest Katz, Sapper & Miller Faculty Fellow.

“These three faculty members have long histories of outstanding research and dedicated service to Kelley Indianapolis,” Cochran said. “Generous gifts like these from both the Schmenner family and Katz, Sapper & Miller will continue to support these faculty members’ on-going research efforts. Having our faculty members actively involved in research projects is at the heart of why the Kelley MBA program was recently ranked first in academic quality by Bloomberg Businessweek.”

The Roger Schmenner Faculty Fellowship was commissioned by the Kelley School of Business in 2007 to honor Schmenner’s tenure and commitment to Kelley Indianapolis. Schmenner is professor emeritus of operations management at the school and served as its associate dean from 1998 to 2007.

“Barbie and I are delighted that Dena Cox is the new Schmenner Faculty Fellow,” Roger Schmenner said. “Dena has high standards and has always been fully committed to doing innovative and first-rate research. She has been a credit to the Kelley School and to the IUPUI campus.”

When Schmenner left his role as associate dean in 2007, he also endowed the Roger and Barbara Schmenner Faculty Fellowship as a way to support colleagues at Kelley. Last year, Schmenner and his wife were one of 30 awardees of the annual IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Award.

Heron, who joined the Kelley School in 1997, was the first recipient of the Roger and Barbara Schmenner Faculty Fellowship and has been reappointed every year.

“Since 2007 I’ve worked on several research projects that have benefited from this summer research support,” Heron said. “With all the contributions that Roger made to this school, it’s an honor to continue to receive a fellowship that bears his name. He did tremendous things for the school, and I certainly hope to be able to pay it forward down the road.”

Established in 2011, the Katz, Sapper & Miller Faculty Fellowship was gifted to Kelley as part of IUPUI’s $1.25 billion IMPACT campaign, the largest fundraising effort in Indiana University history. The fellowship was previously held by professor emeritus of accounting Bill Kulsrud, who also served as the school’s faculty chair for Graduate Accounting Programs in Indianapolis.

Smith, a 12-year member of the Kelley School faculty, was appointed the new chair of Graduate Accounting Programs when Kulsrud announced his retirement last fall.

“Katz, Sapper & Miller has enjoyed a long affiliation with IU’s Kelley School of Business, supporting faculty and hiring students for many years,” said Steve Warner, a partner with KSM who earned his MBA from Indiana University in 1996. “We are pleased and proud to support Professor Smith as he assumes the responsibilities of chair of Indianapolis Graduate Accounting Programs and look forward to working with him to continue the Kelley School’s standard of excellence.”
