Kelley Indianapolis clinical associate professor of marketing receives President’s Award for Teaching

Posted on January 29, 2014 by Teresa Mackin

A great university must have great teachers. They ensure students are prepared for success in the world outside the classroom.

Indiana University President Michael McRobbie named M. Kim Saxton, clinical associate professor of marketing at the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, a recipient of the prestigious President’s Award for Teaching, acknowledging her contributions to student learning and success.

The President’s Award for Teaching was established in 1974. It serves to honor the most exceptional faculty, their devotion to students and their strong commitment to the university’s fundamental missions of excellence in education and research.

“Kim goes above and beyond in her teaching and is certainly an exemplar of the President’s Award criteria,” said Philip L. Cochran, Kelley’s executive associate dean for Indianapolis.

Saxton joined the Kelley School faculty in 2004, following a successful corporate career that included five years in global market research at Eli Lilly and Company. She believes marketers should make data-driven decisions and teaches her students to blend the art and science of marketing. She also challenges them to dig deeper and to make an impact in the world.

Saxton’s marketing students respond. They find novel ways to use knowledge and skills developed in her courses—often to benefit local not-for-profits.

“My marketing strategy course with professor Saxton gave me a chance to make a difference in Indianapolis, while gaining real-world marketing experience,” said Karey Hammon, a 2012 Kelley graduate. “By carrying out an entire marketing campaign for the Central Indiana Homeward Bound event, I had an opportunity to give help and hope to our homeless neighbors.”

Saxton will be honored at the Celebration of Distinguished Teaching on April 4, 2014, as part of IU’s Founders Day celebration.
