Kelley faculty to offer marketing advice to minority, women and veteran business owners

Posted on July 14, 2012 by Teresa Mackin

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Whether it’s baking cakes or roofing a house, small business owners are often great at what they do, but may lack the expertise or staff to devote to marketing their work. That’s why the Department of Minority and Women of the City of Indianapolis is hosting an outreach event titled “Marketing Your Business Effectively,” which will include presentations by Kelley School of Business Indianapolis Senior Lecturer of Marketing Kim Donahue and Clinical Associate Professor of Marketing M. Kim Saxton.

“One of the keys to success for any business is to offer products and services that appeal to their target market,” said Donahue. “But what good does it do to offer the best possible if no one knows about it?

“Large organizations have more resources available to devote towards understanding their target market and getting their message out to that market,” she continued. “Small businesses, especially in today’s environment, are struggling to be able to do the same due to their limited resources.”

Their presentation will look at the basic functions of marketing and more specifically, cost effective ways to reach their target market and increase the awareness towards the company and their offerings.

“We will spend some time on ‘guerilla marketing’ techniques but will focus more on social media marketing through Twitter, Facebook, etc.,” said Donahue. “We hope to help small business owners realize their goals by using their resources effectively and efficiently.”

Both instructors previously volunteered their time for workshops in the NFL’s Emerging Business Program series during Super Bowl XLVI.

Over 1200 women, minority and Veteran business owners are invited to attend the free workshop on August 15, 2012 at the Indianapolis/Marion County Library Services Center. The event is open to the public, but space is limited.
