Three KSBI Alums to Join IUPUI Athletics Hall of Fame

Posted on February 14, 2011 by Teresa Mackin

Three Kelley School graduates will join the IUPUI Athletics Hall of Fame following a Feb. 18 induction ceremony and reception.

Mallory Stemle Cain (tennis), Luke Recker (tennis) and Drew Shafer (golf) will join a list of more than a dozen former Kelley School of Business Indianapolis student-athletes now recognized in the Hall of Fame.

The three honorees and two other former student-athletes will attend a reception in their honor on Friday at Scholars Hall in the University Place Hotel and Conference Center.

Stemle Cain was a four-time First Team All-Conference tennis player during her tenure as a Jaguar. She earned Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year honors her senior season and helped the team make the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and 2004. She holds school records for most singles matches played (117), most doubles wins (84) and ranks second in school history with 67 singles wins.

Stemle Cain also was a successful student. She was named the Mel Garland Distinguished Student Athlete Award as a senior in 2006. She earned her BS degree in management from Kelley Indianapolis in 2006.

Luke Recker was a two-time First-Team All-Conference honoree during his career at IUPUI (2002-2004). In two years, he won 34 singles matches (third all-time) and his .642 winning percentage is second in school history. He holds the IUPUI record for most consecutive wins in a season (13) and his tally of doubles wins (19) ties a school record.

Recker also earned accolades from the classroom. He was named a Verizon Second Team Academic All-American and First Team Academic All-District following his senior season. He earned his BS in finance in 2004.

Shafer, meanwhile, remains one of the few IUPUI student-athletes to have participated in two NCAA Division 1 tournaments. He earned First Team All Mid-Continent Conference honors in 2003 and was the leader during the best season in school history 2004-2005. That year he set a school record with a 74.33 scoring average and capped his senior year with a school record 66 in the NCAA Regionals.

Shafer was awarded his BS degree in marketing in 2005.
