Kelley Teams Take Top 3 Spots in Annual Business Case Competition

Posted on October 25, 2010 by Teresa Mackin

(INDIANAPOLIS) The Kelley School of Business earned a first-place finish in the annual Kelley-Krannert Business Case Competition held Saturday.

The winning team hailed from the Kelley Bloomington campus and was one of three Kelley teams to make the final round. The team from the Kelley Indianapolis campus took home a second-place award and consisted of Avir Kalva, Eric Nibbs, Brandon Moore and Travis Lynch.

None of four teams from the Krannert School of Management from Purdue University advanced.

Mark Ippolito, senior lecturer in operations management and faculty sponsor for the event, said he was pleased with the level of competition this year and happy the Kelley students represented themselves well.

This year the case company was Biomet, the medical manufacturing company based in Warsaw, Ind. Roger Schmenner, professor operations management, wrote the case with the help of Biomet officials, who participated in judging of the competition on Saturday.

“Bob Vitoux, Biomet’s CFO, was very impressed by the quality of the students, from both schools, in terms of the level of their questions in Friday afternoon’s Q and A session and the Saturday presentations,” Ippolito said.

Students were presented facts on a simulated business problem for Biomet and were then asked to analyze the situation, formulate appropriate recommendations and enact solutions beneficial to the company. They were given less than 24 hours to complete the process.
